Abuse Awareness Hike in Greenbelt

On October 4th, women, men, and children across Maryland came together for a 3-mile hike to raise awareness about domestic abuse in the community. Centered on the theme “Stand with the Survivor,” the event created a safe and empowering space for dialogue, healing, and collective action.

Dr. Gwen Saghor delivered an inspiring message on the true essence of the theme, standing in solidarity with survivors and amplifying their voices. The program was skillfully facilitated by Diane Diaga, who guided participants through meaningful discussions enriched with educational materials designed to deepen understanding of domestic abuse and recovery.

Dr. Beatrice Muma led the group along the scenic hiking trail, ensuring the journey was both reflective and energizing. During the event, Dr. Jenkaa offered a powerful talk clarifying the difference between Grace and Abuse, helping participants navigate the fine line between compassion and self-preservation.

The event was beautifully decorated by Maryann, owner of Angel’s Touch Beauty Spa, whose elegant design created an atmosphere of warmth and renewal. DJ Selmo added a dynamic touch by interviewing participants and capturing their stories and reflections throughout the day.

The gathering began with warm-up activities, prayers, and moments of reflection, and concluded with good food, laughter, and fellowship, a true celebration of resilience and sisterhood.

Special thanks to our partners, Welisane Foundation, Pouhikers, Bali Nyonga Sisters, Angel's Touch, our sponsors JLU volunteers, and well-wishers for their unwavering support and commitment to raising awareness and standing with survivors. Together, we walked not just miles, but a shared path toward healing and hope.
