Back to School with Confidence: Anchored Girls Prepare for a New Academic Year

Going back to school is about more than buying supplies, organizing schedules, and selecting the perfect first-day outfit. For many teenage girls, it also means navigating academic expectations, changing friendships, peer pressure, bullying, social media, and the quiet pressure to fit in.
That is why Just Like You Global Foundation brought together 20 teenage girls for a special Back-to-School gathering with the Anchored Girls Leadership Program.
The goal was simple but important: to create a safe space where the girls could speak openly, learn practical strategies, and prepare to return to school with greater confidence.
Creating Space for Honest Conversations
We spent quality time discussing what the new school year could bring, the exciting possibilities as well as the challenges.
The girls explored how to respond to bullying, resist unhealthy peer pressure, make responsible choices on social media, and ask for support when situations become overwhelming. We reminded them that confidence does not mean having every answer or never feeling afraid. Confidence means knowing their values, trusting their voices, and making choices that protect their well-being.
The conversation also addressed the responsibility that comes with social media. The girls were encouraged to pause before posting, protect their privacy, resist comparison, and remember that online popularity should never become the measure of their worth.
Most importantly, we talked about leadership.
Leadership does not begin with a title. It begins with how a young person treats others, handles pressure, responds to conflict, and stands up for herself without diminishing someone else. Every girl was reminded that she can lead, with courage, kindness, discipline, and confidence, inside and outside the classroom.
What We Heard from the Girls and Their Families
The energy in the room reflected how much young people need spaces where they can discuss real issues without fear of judgment.
The girls’ participation showed that bullying, peer pressure, confidence, and social media are not distant concerns. They are part of the everyday decisions teenagers must make. Their questions and contributions demonstrated a desire not only to succeed academically, but also to feel prepared, respected, and secure in who they are.
Parents also expressed appreciation for a program that reinforces the values they are teaching at home. The gathering offered families additional support by giving the girls practical language and tools for navigating situations that parents may not always witness firsthand.
The message from both the girls and their families was clear: these conversations matter, and they must continue.
Books, Reflection, and Wellness
Each participant received two books to support her development throughout the school year.
The girls received a journal they can use to process their experiences, record their goals, and reflect on their growth. Journaling gives young people a private space to name what they are feeling, evaluate their choices, and recognize their progress.
Each girl also received a copy of Seen Between Worlds: A Guide to Belonging for Children from Immigrant Families by Dr. Lizzie Brontë. The book was created to help young people reflect on identity, belonging, culture, confidence, and the experience of navigating more than one world.
Families, educators, mentors, and community leaders can purchase Seen Between Worlds on Amazon and place this important resource in the hands of another young person.
In addition to the books, the girls received personal-care products, including roll-on deodorant, body oil, and other hygiene essentials. These items supported an important part of the program’s message: personal hygiene and wellness are connected to confidence, dignity, and self-respect.
Gratitude to Our Community
This meaningful gathering was possible because of the generosity of our donors, sponsors, volunteers, and community supporters.
Thank you to everyone who contributed food, books, hygiene products, gifts, time, and financial support. Every contribution helped create an experience in which 20 teenage girls felt seen, supported, and better prepared for the school year.
For eight years, the community has stood beside Just Like You Global Foundation and helped us transform compassion into action. Your support allows programs like Anchored Girls to continue providing mentorship, leadership development, wellness education, and safe spaces for young women.
Help Us Reach More Girls
Twenty girls returned to school with new resources, practical strategies, and a stronger reminder of their ability to lead. But many more girls need the same opportunity.
We invite individuals, businesses, and community organizations to support the Anchored Girls Leadership Program through sponsorship, donations, mentorship, or in-kind contributions.
Your support can help us provide books, meals, personal-care products, educational workshops, leadership experiences, and ongoing mentorship to more girls.
When you sponsor Anchored Girls, you are not simply supporting an event. You are investing in the confidence, well-being, and leadership capacity of the next generation.
Help us prepare more girls to return to school seen, supported, and ready to lead.
